Team India largely struggled with their opening combination during the overseas tours in 2018. They travelled to South Africa with Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan as their prime openers but the year has ended with neither of them in the Test team. To make matters worse, even KL Rahul might have run out of the chances. However, the Boxing Day Test witnessed Mayank Agarwal’s rise.

He has shown immense composure in the three outings so far in the whites and seems that he belongs to the highest level. Having said that, the fact that Agarwal came into the squad was due to Prithvi Shaw‘s injury. The youngster who started his international career with a brilliant century against the Windies was the preferred openers for Australia tour. But injury led to him being ruled out of the series.

Now, with Agarwal sealing his place, the former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels that Shaw can join him at the top in the Test team in the future. While speaking to Times Now, he felt that the duo can make wonders for Indian cricket and could be a long-term option for their opening woes.

Those two can take the burden off

“One positive thing is that Mayank Agarwal has done really well. This is his first tour and second Test match. He has been very consistent, we should be happy on that front. now you have another opener in Prithvi Shaw who has settled in. Shaw is someone who has done reasonably well in the first series he played. Those two guys can take the burden of opening the innings in future for a very long time,” Gambhir said.

Moreover, the former opener of the Indian team also felt for KL Rahul whose lean run has extended on this tour as well. He pointed out that opening the innings in the longest format is not easy at all and the talented batsman should be given more time.

“Look, opening is the toughest job in cricket, especially Test cricket. If it would have been easy, a lot of people who got so many runs would have opened the batting, which they never did in Test cricket. You have to be patient with him (Rahul),” the recently retired cricketer added.
