Gautam Gambhir spills the beans on his favorite team in the FIFA World Cup

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is done and dusted with the Group matches. The round of 16 will get underway from tomorrow and the tournament is already into its knockout phases. Quite evidently, the teams have minimal room for errors as the event enters the crunch phases. In the Group encounters, three teams- Uruguay, Croatia, and Belgium finished with victories in all their 3 matches.

Statistically, Croatia had the second most goal difference (six) compared to Belgium’s seven. Luka Modric, their skipper, has led from the front with a couple of goals in three contests. He plays for Real Madrid in the Spanish La Liga and was a part of their victorious squad in this year’s Champions League under the protégé of the enigmatic Zinedine Zidane.

Croatia’s strong performance

Modric’s men commenced their World Cup campaign with a resounding 2-0 triumph over Nigeria. An own goal from the opponent followed by the skipper’s penalty in the 71st minute carved the win. In their second match, they ripped apart Argentina, who were touted to be the favorites to top the group, by a resounding 3-0. The captain scored again supported by Ante Rebic and Ivan Rakitic’s goal.

Iceland became the first team to score versus them, however, goals from Milan Badelj and Ivan Perisic ensured that they finish atop the table. Their round of 16 match is scheduled against Denmark, who was able to win only a solitary match in Group C. Meanwhile, the cricketing fraternity is also ardently following the championship.

The Indian cricketers, both current and former, are keeping an eye on the extravaganza. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have shared their opinions on the event. Recently, Gautam Gambhir also opined about his favorite team to lift the Cup. A Twitter user asked about the team he has been rooting for to which Gambhir mentioned Croatia.
