Zimbabwe will be deprived of the services of their former captain Graeme Cremer in the upcoming series against South Africa and Bangladesh between September and November. The 31-year-old leg-spinner is recovering from a knee surgery and will be out of action for a minimum of eight weeks. Cremer has a history of a knee injury and the team’s physiotherapist asserted that the surgery became a necessity since conservative medication could not help him recover.

Cremer has played 19 Tests, 96 ODIs and 29 T20 Internationals for Zimbabwe since making his international debut in 2005 and last appeared in the World Cup qualifier at home in March this year. He has 211 international wickets in all the three formats combined. The bowler, however, also has a century in Tests which he scored against Sri Lanka in Harare a couple of years ago.

Graeme Cremer was sacked as Zimbabwe’s captain after they failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup and since then, he, along with a number of other key Zimbabwean players like Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, Sikander Raza and Sean Williams, hasn’t played any international match because of salary issues. The international commitments included a T20I tri-series that also featured Pakistan and Australia and a five-match ODI series against Pakistan.

Zimbabwe, however, would get the service of players like Kyle Jarvis and Solomon Mire – who were down with injuries – for the upcoming series, said an ESPNcricinfo report. While Jarvis had a broken finger and is nearing complete fitness, Mire who missed the ODIs versus Pakistan because of a gluteal tear is also back.

“Mire has now fully recovered from his ankle injury while his gluteal is now strong following successful rehab. He will be ready for our South Africa and Bangladesh tours,” Zimbabwe’s physiotherapist Anesu Mupotaringa said. “Jarvis is recovering very well following his second operation on his fractured thumb in Cape Town. He has now started doing light bowling and batting drills with the team and we hope he will be ready for South Africa.”

Zimbabwe will travel to the rainbow nation for three ODIs and as many T20Is in September and October and will then fly to Bangladesh for three ODIs and two Tests.
