In a rain-curtailed encounter between Western Storm and Loughborough Lightning in a premier franchise-based T20 tournament in England, Indian Opener Smriti Mandhana smashed joint fastest fifty in Women’s T20 history. With the constant drizzle, the game was reduced to six overs each, in which the spectators witnessed too much firepower and in the end, it was Western Storm’s women who managed to upstage the opposition comprehensively.

After being asked to bat first, Smriti Mandhana opened the innings with the wicket-keeper batsman Rachel Priest. The duo managed to give the perfect start to their team after they managed to produce some firecrackers and bat 5 overs. The partnership of 71 runs between Mandhana and Priest was slightly dominated with Mandhana’s batting, who smashed 52 runs in just 19 deliveries at an astonishing strike-rate 273.68. Her innings was laced with five boundaries and four mighty sixes.

In the innings of 52 runs, Mandhana not only managed to be the highest scorer but has also been able to set new standards in women’s cricket. Hammering 50 runs in boundaries defines the stature she carries. Her innings helped Western Storm to reach a competitive score of 85 runs in six overs.

After Mandhana’s innings, many stars came all praising with one of the best tweet coming from Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh who tweeted saying, “Smashing innings @mandhana_smriti! 50 of just 18 balls! Well done!” This tweet went viral, which led the women’s team to believe that they are being watched closely and appreciated for what they have been achieving.

Chasing the mammoth total, Loughborough Lightning openers went after the bowling attack and were trying their best to accelerate the innings with every over. The Kiwi star Sophie Devine scored most of the runs, scoring 46 of just 21 deliveries. However, she didn’t get the best support from her partner who managed to score just 18 runs in 15 deliveries. The partnership could only manage 67 runs and fell well short of the required total.
