Ever since its inception, the Indian Premier League(IPL) has been a major success story. The IPL, over the years, has grown more popular as the cash-filled league did justice to its tag. The premier domestic league of India in the process has made the BCCI extremely rich. However, it is also fast becoming the reason for the board to be potentially looking at a cash outflow of nothing less than Rs 4900 crore going forward, which is a little in excess of US$750m.

Here’s a break-up of the kind of payments that BCCI could be looking to pay in the near future: Rs 2420 crore: All cases related to the Enforcement Directorate (with regards to the 2009 IPL in South Africa); Rs1250 crore: Other legal cases and settlements including Kochi Tuskers; Rs 540 crore: Income Tax; Rs 600 crore: Service Tax; Rs 90 crore: SalesTax / MVAT; Rs 52.54 crore: Fine slapped by the Competitions Commission of India.

As per the quotes in TOI, Currently, the SC-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) which is running the BCCI affairs cleared any air of ambiguity saying: “If CoA wants to look into matters like Future Tours Program (FTP) and player salaries – which is not their brief – then they should also be looking into these matters.”

Flurry of changes expected in next media rights tender

Earlier this year in September, Star India Pvt Ltd bought the media rights to the IPL for a massive Rs 16,347 crore. With the revenue model of the IPL set to change from 2018 onwards, the money committed by Star, along with other revenues generated from the Central Pool, will be divided between BCCI and the franchises at a 50:50 sharing ratio over the next five years.

With a flurry of changes expected, the board has fixed to bring out the tender for Indian cricket media rights in January 2018, which in turn will present a fresh canvas for the game at the international and domestic level over the next four years.
