Here is how the World Test Championship points table stands after SL vs AUS Tests

Sri Lanka won the second Test match against Australia in Galle by an innings and 39 runs on July 11, Monday, and levelled the two-match series 1-1. Sri Lanka also registered their fourth win in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23, and Australia faced their first defeat in the competition.

Australia slip to the second position while South Africa move to number one. Sri Lanka are now in the third position followed by Pakistan and India who take the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. West Indies, with four wins, are placed sixth.

England with five wins in 16 games stand in seventh place, followed by New Zealand with two wins in nine games. Bangladesh remain at the bottom of the table, registering one win and a draw in ten matches.

Dinesh Chandimal’s heroics puts the game out of Australia’s grasp

As far as the match is concerned, Australia, after batting first, scored 364 runs in the first innings in 110 overs, courtesy of centuries from Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith. Labuschagne was dismissed for 104 runs while opener Usman Khawaja contributed with 37 runs. Smith scored an unbeaten 145 runs and also broke his century drought. The left-arm orthodox spinner Prabhath Jayasuriya was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers in the innings, picking up six wickets for 118 runs.

Sri Lanka, in their first innings, scored 554 runs in 181 overs, with four batters scoring a fifty and one scoring a hundred. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne scored 86, Kusal Mendis, at number three, scored 85, Angelo Mathews, at number four, scored 52 and Kamindu Mendis, at number six, scored 61. Dinesh Chandimal scored his maiden double hundred, and remained unbeaten on 206 runs off 326 balls, with 16 fours and five sixes.

Chandimal also set a record for the highest score by a Sri Lankan batter against Australia, going past 192 set by Kumar Sangakkara. Australia were trailing by 190 before tea on Day 4 and were bowled out for 151 in 41 overs. Jayasuriya once again picked up a six-wicket haul and finished with figures of six for 59 runs in the second innings.
