Lanky left-arm spinner Axar Patel, who was one of India‘s star performers in the ODI series opener against Sri Lanka in Dambulla has revealed that the current team has the potential to win the ICC World Cup 2019. Following the team’s recent winning streak, Patel is confident that the Men in Blue can clinch the championship, slated to be held in England.

The visitors had recently decimated the hosts with a clean sweep in the recently concluded three-match Test series. The Indian team embarked on their tour to the island nation in a difficult phase given the prior troubled scenario regarding coach selection. However, the Indian team has overcome every obstacle since then and their comprehensive victory serves as a testament to that.

Upbeat with the presence of youngsters in the squad

Speaking in an interview with fellow team-mate Jasprit Bumrah, Patel told BCCI, “The great aspect about this team is that this team doesn’t depend on an individual. Everyone is performing and hopefully we will continue to perform well in the coming matches as well. I think there are all youngsters in the team. The average age of the team is around 26-27. We enjoy each other’s success. The most important part about this team is that we jell up well alongside each other. And I am sure that this team will win the 2019 World Cup.”

The 23-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner, who made a comeback to the Indian team after a six-month hiatus, grabbed the career-best haul of 3 for 34 in the first ODI against the island nation. Apart from picking crucial wickets, the left-arm spinner also choked the flow of runs of the Lankan team as they were bundled out for 216 runs inside 43 overs.  Speaking about his comeback, the 23-year-old is extremely upbeat with his performance despite the six month sabbatical.
