Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian cricketer, has been in the thick of things after being crowned as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Prince of Kolkata became the second Indian skipper after 65 years to be given the massive role. It was Union Minister Anurag Thakur, who put forth Ganguly’s name in an informal meeting at the Trident in Mumbai.

He pipped Brijesh Patel for the position and was the only presidential nominee. After his appointment, he was greeted with wishes and accolades from every nook and corner for the country. Dada, as Ganguly is popularly known, has set his goals clear for the betterment of cricket.

However, the enigmatic figure doesn’t believe in the word ‘Control’. “I don’t enjoy that word Control,” Ganguly was quoted as saying in a press-conference while answering one of the many questions asked to him during the interaction.

Sourav Ganguly taking over with BCCI not in great shape

Ganguly has taken over at a time when the BCCI hasn’t been in the greatest of positions, especially for the last three years. Even he admitted the same, but reckons it as a great chance to do some good and get things back on track. The 47-year-old wants to meet the stakeholders of Indian cricket.

Moreover, he wishes to do something that the Committee of Administrators (CoA), appointed by the Supreme Court. He will demit office in July and will go off on a cooling period After Ganguly’s words on ‘Control’, Joy Bhattacharjya, the veteran sports journalist, lauded Sourav for the ‘excellent idea’.

He believed that the world’s richest cricket board was equivalent to a ‘British Institution’, something which doesn’t help in promoting the game. Bhattacharjya is now hoping for Ganguly to change and resurrect the tarnished reputation of the cricket board in India.

As far as Ganguly’s plans are concerned, his first priority in his short tenure is to take care of the first-class cricketers. Ganguly feels that since India is a cricketing powerhouse, it will be a challenge for him to take the responsibility. He also didn’t expect to be the president in the first go.
