England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan has shared his plans to lead his team to another World Cup win. He said that he is focused on handling his workload to stay fit for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia but said it is too early to say anything about the ODI World Cup in 2023. Morgan has recently struggled with fitness and has also been poor with his bat in white-ball cricket.
He is leading the English team for almost eight years now and guided them to the T20 World Cup final in 2016. England also won the World Cup in 2019 under his leadership, but Morgan has struggled to perform at the highest level in the last two years. England are well stacked with middle-order batters in the form of Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Moeen Ali, and Ben Stokes. Hence, Morgan will not find it easy to feature in every match of future series despite being a captain.
“That’s a long way away. I need to get to the T20 one first. I’m going to take it as it comes, managing my contribution, my body. At the moment, I still feel like I contribute and still feel like I can contribute to a World Cup win. That’s an important drive for me,” Morgan said in the pre-match press conference.
It’s unlikely I will be playing every England game this summer: Morgan
The 35-year-old batter last played for England in January 2022 in a T20I series against West Indies and suffered a quadriceps injury. He is set to lead in the upcoming three-match ODI series on the Netherlands tour starting this Friday (June 17).
Morgan last played an ODI almost a year ago and it will be interesting to see how he performs in the Netherlands as England prepare for the six-match white-ball format series against India next month. Morgan is expecting to play only a handful of matches to avoid more injuries ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022.
“Some of our international games are back-to-back. I did it in the West Indies where I played Saturday, and Sunday, and then injured myself before the game on Wednesday. That was a result of playing two international games back-to-back. So it’s unlikely I will be playing every England game this summer,” he said.
