Last week, Indian cricket and its fans went down memory lane as they rejoiced what was a watershed moment in World Cricket. India winning the inaugural T20 revolutionized Twenty20 cricket in general. We have played that ball by Joginder Sharma and that fateful shot that Misbah million times. We also remember who took that catch: S Sreesanth, and always wonder: What would have happened had he dropped it? What if he had made hara-kiri of it?

Fortunately, he didn’t!! Bur few people would remember Sreesanth’s match-winning spell of (3-12) in the semi-finals against Australia or the way he knocked over the Proteas, not once, but twice [2006 & 2010] to orchestrate two of India’s finest wins in the rainbow nation. From taking the World T20 winning catch in 2007 to being a part of the 2011 World Cup win to then getting involved in a spot-fixing scandal two years later, few cricketers have seen such excruciating highs and lows in his career like Sreesanth has.

Back in 2013, S Sreesanth was imprisoned in Tihar jail, along with his Rajasthan Royals teammates, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan and was also handed a life ban for his alleged involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal. However, his ban has bow been reduced to seven years by the Supreme Court, which ends in September 2020.

Sreesanth opens up on his ordeal in Tihar Jail

In the latest interview to The Indian Express, the former Indian fast bowler opened up about his ordeal in Tihar Jail and how he was treated there, “There was this guy – murderer, and rapist – who used to abuse me a lot. Every other word was an abuse. I was scared of him. I soon realized I had to do something about it. I started to speak to him and I remember after a few days he said, ‘Tere me to dum nahi, teri to fatt gayi… Saath rehna, tero ko karne ke liye bohot log hai. (You are scared. Stay with me. Lots of people want to target you)’,” Sreesanth told.

Sreesanth, who has played 27 Tests and 53 ODIs for Team India, said there were occasions when he couldn’t sleep because “that bulb ” wouldn’t switch-off, “I would break down for no reason. I used to get seizures for 6-7 weeks. I couldn’t sleep as in Tihar they had that bulb that they wouldn’t switch off,” Sreesanth said.

A member of India’s 2007 & 2011 World Cup-winning team, Sreesanth featured in 93 international matches [27 Tests, 53 ODIs & 10 T20Is] and claimed 169 wickets including four 5-wicket-hauls. His last ODI for India is coincidentally the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai.
