The Decision Review System (DRS) was introduced in the game of cricket to solve the problems, to assist the umpires in reducing the errors while making decisions. It uses hotspot technology to detect if there was an edge of the bat, snico is there for the audio evidence. Then there is the Haw Eye ball-tracking system for lbw decisions. It tracks where the ball was pitched, the impact, trajectory, pace and other aspects involved at the time the ball hit the pads to project its journey which never actually happened.

While most cricket board in the country have adopted the DRS to eliminate howlers the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has stood firmly against the system since it isn’t foolproof as of now. It is the Hawk Eye that they have an objection with and on numerous occasions, in the past, the BCCI top brass and skipper MS Dhoni have said that they will not opt for it unless the margin of error goes further down.

DRS wasn’t used in the recently concluded India-New Zealand series but it is learned that with the England team scheduled to tour India for a two-Test series the board is giving it a thought to implement the DRS. Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli had very recently said that he is not against the use of technology and is definitely open to its use anytime in the future.

Since the BCCI is the only International Cricket Council (ICC) member nation that is yet to accept the DRS in its present form. The ICC General Manager Geoff Allardice will submit a presentation on upgraded DRS before the BCCI in Delhi on October 20. All the important men, BCCI president Anurag Thakur, chief coach Anil Kumble and Test captain Virat Kohli to be present in the meeting.

“We are open to DRS if they (ICC) could show that system is improved,” said Thakur on Sunday. “Kumble, who is also heading ICC Cricket Committee, has studied the report of Massachusetts Institute of Technology report on DRS. The ICC GM will make a presentation. After that only we can say whether DRS is acceptable to us or not,” said Thakur.
