ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier, 2019: Final, Netherlands vs Papua New Guinea – Glover's record year, Doeschate's T20I average and more stats

Netherlands clinched the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier title as they recorded a comfortable 7-wicket win against Papua New Guinea in the final. The Dutch team’s only defeat in this tournament came against PNG where they failed to defend their total of 126. A similar game was witnessed on Saturday night but the Netherlands ended up winning this time. They limited the Group A toppers to 128/4 and chased it down with an over to spare.

A finals win for the Netherlands:

1 – The 7-wicket win in this game was Netherlands’ maiden win in a tournament final in International cricket. Netherlands featured in the final of WT20 Qualifiers held in 2008 against Ireland which was washed out after a toss. The Dutch team made it to final of the WT20 Qualifiers took place in 2015. However, the final scheduled to be played against Scotland was abandoned.

3 – Including the two shared titles, the Netherlands is now the most successful team in the T20 World Cup Qualifiers. Ireland also won three titles while Afghanistan and Scotland (shared) won one title each.

An unchanged team:

8 – Papua New Guinea played all the matches in this tournament with the same playing XI. These are the most number of matches any team has played in a T20I tournament/series with same 11 players. During the 2014 WT20, the Netherlands played all the seven matches with the same XI.

During the same tournament, West Indies played all the five games with the same line-up while Qatar also used only 11 players across the five matches they featured in this year’s ACC Western Region T20 hosted by Oman.

Glover delivers it for Dutch:

16 – Brandon Glover has taken 16 wickets in this tournament; the joint 2nd most by any player in a T20I series/tournament. Bilal Khan of Oman has 18 wickets from nine matches in this tournament and own the record for most wickets in a T20I series/tournament. Namibia’s JJ Smit also took 16 wickets from nine games while Glover played only eight matches.

28 – Number of wickets for Glover in the T20I cricket in 2019; the joint 2nd most by any player in a calendar year in Men’s T20I cricket. Andrew Tye bagged 31 wickets in 2018 while Jasprit Bumrah (in 2016), Shadab Khan (in 2018) and Sandeep Lamichhane (in 2019) also claimed 28 T20I wickets in a year.

Only behind Kohli and Babar:

44.41 – Ryan ten Doeschate’s batting average of 44.41 is the 3rd best for any player with 500 runs in T20I cricket. Only Babar Azam (51.88) and Virat Kohli (50) have higher averages in the T20I format.

An effective opening combination:

377 – Papua New Guinea’s opening pair of Assad Vala and Tony Ura added 377 runs with a century partnership and two 50-run stands in this tournament. These are the 2nd most runs by a pair for any wicket in a T20I series/tournament.

Aaron Finch-D’Arcy Short pair shared 382 runs also for the first wicket during the last year’s T20 Tri-series in Zimbabwe. Vala-Ura pair added only 30 runs in last three matches and missed out on World record.

Scott gets a new T20I record:

13 – The Netherlands’ keeper Scott Edwards took 13 catches in the tournament; the most dismissals by any player in a T20I series/tournament. The 2nd most are 11 dismissals by Zane Green also in this tournament with seven catches and four stumpings.

The 26 dismissals in 2019 by Edwards are also the 2nd most by any keeper in a calendar year which includes a record 23 catches. India’s MS Dhoni affected 27 dismissals including a world record 11 stumpings.

Finishing off with a six:

8 – Ryan ten Doeschate finished off this final by hitting a six on the last ball of the 19th over. He thus became the 8th player to score the winning runs in a T20I final with a maximum. Thisara Perera and Carlos Brathwaite respectively in the 2014 and 2016 WT20 editions, Mohammad Shahzad in the 2010 WT20 Qualifier achieved this feat in an ICC organized tournament like Doeschate.
