India have defeated Australia by 100 runs in their opening game in the ongoing ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand. The game was the marquee clash as both the teams had some sensational young talent in their ranks. But it was the Men in Blue who shone for their country stifling the Aussies when it mattered on the day. However, the skipper led from the front with the bat upfront and won the game for India thereby commencing the campaign on the winning note.

Prithvi Shaw won the toss when the coin was flipped at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui and opted to bat first. He also opened the innings along with Manjot Kalra and pummeled the Aussie bowlers nonchalantly. Shaw was dismissed early but the bowler had bowled a no-ball and made the most of a reprieve. The openers added 180 until the 30th over as the captain missed out on a well-deserved ton by just 6 runs. He scored 94 off just 100 runs with eight fours and a couple of sixes.

Kalra was also dismissed soon but another talented Indian Shubman Gill batted beautifully even as there was a mini-collapse from the other end. While the other opener scored 86, Gill smashed an aggressive 63 off 54 balls. Late wickets brought Australia back in the game but India managed to post a hefty total of 328 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs. Jack Edwards was the pick of the bowlers for the Aussies as he returned with the figures of 4/65.

Australian chase which never threatened

Australia needed to be ahead of the game right through the chase but they surprisingly never showed the intent like their opposition. The likes of Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi consistently hit the 148 kph mark and impressed many cricket experts. The former struck up front in the 15th over to scalp Max Bryant. The skipper Jason Sangha was also sent back by the spinner Abhishek Sharma. There was a partnership which threatened for sometime between Jack Edwards and Jonathan Merlo.

But once that stand was broken, it was all one-way traffic with India picking wickets at regular intervals. Edwards was the only batsman to shine as he scored 73 and was the sixth wicket to fall eventually sealing the fate of the Men from down under. Australia collapsed from 145/2 to 228 all out under the pressure of the ever-increasing required run-rate. India won the game by 100 runs and have made the statement at the start of the tournament.

Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi scalped three wickets each with the other bowlers supporting them well. The skipper Prithvi Shaw was awarded the Man of the Match for his sensational knock at the top which set the platform for the upcoming batsmen to come. Australia, on the other hand, now have to resurrect themselves and win the remaining two games to qualify for the next round.
