ICC U19 World Cup 2020, Day 6 Round Up

Day six of the U19 World Cup was a pretty eventful one. In Group D, Afghanistan have already made their way into the quarter-finals, having won back-to-back games. After beating South Africa, they thrashed the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 160 runs at the North-West University No.1 Ground in Potchefstroom. Ibrahim Zadran’s 87 and Rahmanullah’s 81 helped the Afghans put 265 on board.

In reply, UAE made a steady start with a 61-run stand for the first wicket between Aryan Lakra and Vritya Anand. Then Shafiqullah Ghafari’s five-wicket haul blew them away. The UAE lost their last nine wickets for 44 runs and slumped to a defeat by 160 runs. In the other match in the group, South Africa beat Canada by 150 runs at the Senwes Park, Potchefstroom to stay alive in the tournament.

After being put in to bat first, the Proteas racked up 349 on the board courtesy skipper Bryce Parson’s 121. He got the apt support from Jonathan Bird and Tyrese Karelse, both of whom who scored half-centuries. In their run-chase, Benjamin Calitz scored 62. Achille Cloete, Tiaan van Vuuren, Merrick Brett and Jack Less picked up two wickets each and took South Africa to a 150-run victory.

Pakistan makes their way through to quarters

In Group A, New Zealand were involved in a humdinger of a contest with Sri Lanka at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein. The Lankans scored 242 on the board on the backs of Ahan Wickramasinghe’s 64. In the run-chase, the Kiwis rode on Rhys Mariu’s 86 and Beckham Wheeler-Greenall’s 80 to scrip a three-wicket win. Kristian Clarke hit a six off the penultimate ball to take the Kiwis over the line.

In Group C, Pakistan became the second team after Bangladesh to qualify for the quarter-finals. They beat Zimbabwe by 38 runs at the Witrand Cricket Field in Potchefstroom. Fahad Munir, Qasim Akram and Mohammad Haris took Pakistan to a formidable 294. In the chase, Zimbabwe hung on for quite a while, before getting bowled out for 256. Tahir Hussain and Abbas Afridi got three wickets each.
