At the half-way mark of their run-chase, India was almost dead and buried. However, Virat Kohli’s men fought back valiantly courtesy of a 106-run stand between MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja. However, all those efforts went in vain as the Black Caps won by 18 runs at the Old Trafford in Manchester. The Kiwis ceased their three-match losing streak and stormed into their second World Cup final after 2015.

Taylor and Williamson steady the ship

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Kiwis couldn’t get going as Jasprit Bumrah nipped out Martin Guptill. Henry Nicholls (28) showed determination before Ravindra Jadeja rattled his woodwork. The onus was on the experienced heads of Kane Williamson (67) and Ross Taylor (74) to take the Kiwis’ inning forward. The duo didn’t falter by any means and put on a partnership of 65 runs off 17 overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal gave India the breakthrough, dismissing Williamson, caught by Ravindra Jadeja. James Neesham (12) and Colin de Grandhomme (16) perished after threatening for a while. But it was Taylor, who accomplished a half-century off 73 balls and guided the Black Caps to 239 in 50 overs. For India, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the most successful, having picked up three crucial wickets, conceding 43 runs.

Dhoni and Jadeja’s knock go in vain

The Men in Blue got off to a horrendous start as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul went back, leaving their team reeling at 5/3 in a mere 3.1 overs. Dinesh Karthik failed as well. Matt Henry was the wrecker in chief as he got rid of Rahul, Rohit and Karthik. Rishabh Pant (32) tried hard, but a rather rash stroke off Mitchell Santner led to his dismissal. Even Hardik Pandya (32) threw his wicket to Santner.

With 148 needed off 19.3 overs, MS Dhoni (49) and Ravindra Jadeja (77) took charge. They started carefully and gradually gained momentum. Jadeja got to his first ODI fifty after 2014 and he was the aggressor in the stand. Dhoni showed maturity and looked calm. Boult dismissed Jadeja to jolt India. Guptill pulled off an incredible run-out of Dhoni to end India’s campaign in the 2019 World Cup.
