ICC World Cup 2019: Match 42, AFG v WI – Windies Player Ratings

In his last World Cup game, Chris Gayle didn’t blow the opposition apart. There wasn’t any storm off his bat in any way and it was a rather uncharacteristic knock. He usually takes time to settle in but ensures that he gets a good score. But on this occasion, the ‘Universe Boss’ took 18 balls but scored only 7 runs. With the ball, though, he bowled 6 overs and even took the wicket of Ikram Ali Khil, preventing him from becoming the first teenage centurion in a World Cup game.

Evin Lewis – 7/10

Evin Lewis scored 36 of his 58 runs in only boundaries. While he took the responsibility, he consumed a bit too many deliveries. Lewis took 78 balls to score as many runs and a strike rate of 74.36 to his name is quite unusual. He was just about shifting gears before he got out and ideally should have scored big. However, he badly mistimed one off the bowling of Rashid Khan to find his way back into the pavilion.

Shai Hope – 8.5/10

Shai Hope put an end to the tournament with a good knock. But the way he threw his wicket away after toiling so hard was frustrating. Hope already hit a couple of fours in the 38th over. But he got a little too greedy and wanted to hit the third. He failed in his attempt and had to return for only 77 runs, missing out on a well-deserved hundred.

Shimron Hetmyer – 6/10

Hetmyer batted aggressively right through his innings and was always threatening to throw his wicket away. He scored 39 runs off 31 balls, hit three fours and two sixes before he got out. The youngster was given a reprieve when the two fielders failed to call for the catch and it fell in between both of them. However, he couldn’t make the most of this life that he got.

Nicholas Pooran – 8/10

Nicholas Pooran played another gem of a knock for his team. Windies required some acceleration towards the end and he provided that along with Jason Holder. The fact that his team scored over 100 runs in the last 10 overs wouldn’t have been possible without him. The 23-year-old scored 58 runs off just 43 deliveries before he was dismissed run out in the final over due to sheer ignorance. He dropped the catch of Rashid Khan on the field.

Jason Holder – 7.5/10

Jason Holder played a great knock and scored at a good pace as well. The Windies skipper smashed four massive sixes in his knock and mustered 45 runs from just 34 balls before he got out in the final over. He wasn’t much effective with the ball, though. In the 8 overs that he bowled, Holder conceded 46 runs.

Carlos Brathwaite – 9/10

Carlos Brathwaite provided his team with the final impetus. He faced the last four balls of the Windies innings. He sent two of those for fours and one for a six. The all-rounder remained unbeaten on 14 off 4 balls. He had a good day with the ball also. While he was on the expensive side, Brathwaite picked up the wickets of Rahmat Shah, Asghar Afghan, Rashid Khan and Dawlat Zadran. He was even involved in the run-out of Najibullah.

Fabian Allen – 1/10

Even though he walked out into the middle with the bat, Fabian Allen didn’t get to face a single delivery. He bowled three overs with the ball where he conceded 26 runs. Allen had a good day while fielding, though.

Sheldon Cottrell – 1.5/10

Sheldon Cottrell wasn’t as effective as he usually is in this game. The left-arm pacer bowled 7 overs but found very little success. He conceded 43 runs and didn’t pick up any wickets. Cottrell took one catch while fielding.

Oshane Thomas – 2/10

Oshane Thomas had yet another bad outing where he was relatively expensive. The skipper held Thomas up for a long time after he bowled his first spell. Thomas bowled seven overs in the match and gave away 43 runs at an economy rate of 6.10. He was lucky enough to pick up a wicket on the final ball of the innings.

Kemar Roach – 8/10

Kemar Roach brought out yet another highly clinical performance in this match. Two of the ten overs that he bowled were maidens. He only conceded 37 runs and picked up a three-wicket haul as well. He dismissed three dangerous batsmen – Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi and Samiullah Shinwari.
