Sri Lankan batters made the Indian bowlers toil hard in what turned out to be a fruitful day for the visiting side. Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal scored a gritty hundred, so did Angelo Mathews. The smog-break that took centre stage on Sunday afternoon has been a talking point since then. The 17-minute break and several stoppages of play led to the declaration of the Indian innings.

Sri Lanka in reply scored 373. Indian pacer Mohammed Shami became the first victim from the hosts’ camp as he felt uncomfortable and threw up after taking the wicket of opener Sadeera Samarawickrama. Shami bowled a bounder but stopped mid-way and went down on his knees.

“Pollution is an aspect that we seriously need to think about. But what was being portrayed (by Sri Lanka), it wasn’t to that extent. Also it could be that we are more used to (pollution) it and our ability to adjust is much more compared to them,” said the 27-year-old pacer.

Sri Lankan players threw up

A day before yesterday, Sri Lankan coach Nic Pothas had complained about several Lankan players vomiting and feeling sick due to the poor air quality.”We had players coming off the field and vomiting,” he told reporters after the match. “There were oxygen cylinders in the change room. It’s not normal for players to suffer in that way while playing the game.”

Pothas said pacer Suranga Lakmal was “continuously vomiting” in the dressing room, where the team doctors and the match referee had gathered to examine the situation.I think it’s the first time that everybody has come across that situation,” he added.

“There aren’t too many rules regarding pollution. What we are going to do tomorrow is in the hands of the match referee. They will have meetings tonight to put in some sort of a precedent if it happens like this tomorrow.” he had said.
