India and West Indies are facing each other in the second One-Day International of the three-match series in Ahmedabad. The visitors won the toss and opted to bowl first in a bid to restrict India to a decent total and chase it down to keep the series alive. West Indies began their bowling innings well too nipping out the top three batters – Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli – of the hosts and leave them reeling at 43/3 after 12 overs.

This is when KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav joined hands to rebuild the innings. The duo took their time initially before launching a counterattack courtesy the former. The run-rate improved soon and both batters were starting to look comfortable even as Rahul also looked to be coasting to his fifty. But something struck him while taking his 50th run in the 30th over and he got out.

Rahul drove Kemar Roach’s delivery square of the wicket and an easy couple was available. His partner Suryakumar Yadav also responded to his call but for some reason, India’s limited-overs vice-captain stopped in the middle of the pitch. And before he realised and looked to complete the run, Akeal Hosein had rocketed the throw to wicketkeeper Shai Hope who did the rest to find the batter well short of the crease.

Rahul looked annoyed at Suryakumar but the replays showed the latter had responded to his call. It isn’t clear why Rahul stopped during his second run which resulted in breaking a brilliant 91-run partnership.

Rishabh Pant opens the innings for India

Meanwhile, India managed to throw in a surprise for everyone opening with Rishabh Pant in the second ODI despite KL Rahul being available. Rahul batted at four in the game while the move to promote Pant at the top didn’t work at all. The left-hander scored 18 off just 34 balls before getting out to Odean Smith.

Virat Kohli‘s wait for the 71st international century only extended as he also was dismissed by the same bowler on 18. Earlier, Rohit Sharma was the first to go having mustered only five runs with Kemar Roach dismissing him.
