India are currently ranked number two in ICC’s ODI rankings with 122 rating points after 48 matches. England top the list with 126 points in 45 matches. Both teams will now lock horns in a three-match ODI series, which starts on July 12 at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham. With both teams are breathing down each other’s neck, either of the two sides can end up with the top position.

For the Men In Blue, they have to win all their three matches in Nottingham, the iconic Lord’s and Leeds respectively to claim the number one position in the table. Virat Kohli’s men will move to the top of the rankings if they win the first two matches and then need to win the last encounter in order to stay put in their top spot.

In the scenario, India will be ranked number one in both Tests and ODIs while being placed second in T20Is. Virat’s troops have never been on top of both ODIs and Test ranking for more than three weeks and they will be looking to hold on to their position for a longer period, provided India manage a clean sweep.

Can India beat England in their own den?

The Brits have been in red-hot form in the ODI format. They beat Australia by 5-0 in their erstwhile series. In Nottingham, they also notched the highest ever ODI score of 481 after which they managed to rack up their most comprehensive victory in terms of margin of runs. India’s last ODI series was back in February 2018 against South Africa where they emerged triumphant by a margin of 5-1.

Virat was the leading run scorer of the series. He piled as many as three centuries in the six matches and annihilated their opponents. The spinners in Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were the leading wicket-takers. However, winning against England won’t be a stroll in the park by any stretch of the imagination.
