India v Bangladesh a Factual Faceoff: The Bangla Tigers have been known for throwing in surprises on many occasions and at numerous times, they have caused major upsets to the biggies of the game. They are no longer the minnows of cricket. They do have the talent to watch for and India would definitely not like to take them lightly. It has not been long when it all spiced up between Virat Kohli and Rubel Hossain in the quarter-finals of the recently concluded World cup and fans would definitely look forward to this tussle. Though the tour is short with only a one-off test series and a 3-match ODI series, we hope we get the greatest taste of the game and hope to see some real cricketing action out there. Let us take a look at the overall statistics of the two teams whenever they locked horns –

Face-to-face

Test:

The two nations have played 8 matches in total, all 8 in Bangladesh. Out of these, India has won 7 and 1 ended in a draw. So that means Bangladesh has won….umm none till now. India is definitely the favorite in this Test Series.

ODI:

India and Bangladesh have played 30 matches against each other out of which India has registered win in 83.3%, i.e 25 matches, Bangladesh has won 3 and 2 have remained without any result. If we talk about the matches played in Bangladesh, India has won 16 out of 20 matches, 2 being won by Bangladesh and remaining 2 ending up without any result.

Biggest Win

Test:

This definitely is held by India, no guesses here. The only question can be by how much? In May, 2007 India beat Bangladesh in Dhaka by an innings and 239 runs. This is India’s biggest win over Bangladesh in Tests.

ODI:

By runs and by number of wickets – India has defeated Bangladesh by huge margins in both the cases. It dates long back to Oct, 1988 when India defeated the Bangla tigers by 9 wickets with 114 balls remaining. India registered a huge win in April, 2003 when it beat Bangladesh by 200 runs. The Bangla tigers were bundled for meagre 76 runs.

Highest Score

Test:

India made 610/3d in May 2007. It was the highest score in an innings between the two nations. All of India’s top 4 – Dinesh Karthik, Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar smashed centuries in this innings and it proved to be a run-fest.

ODI:

On 19th Feb, 2011 Sehwag opened the innings and went on to hit a blistering 175. Down the order, Kohli also smashed a century. The scoreboard then read 370/4. Though Bangladesh gave a good fight, they could never reach near the target and India won the match by 87 runs.

Lowest Score

Test:

In the only test match of the tour in November 2000, Bangladesh innings was bundled up for only 91 runs in their 2nd innings. India got a target of 63 runs to win the match and won it with 9 wickets in hand.

ODI:

One of the lowest totals of all times, 58 was what Bangladesh could manage to score against India on 17th June, 2014. Stuart Binny’s fierce spell of 4.4-2-4-6 completely shattered their batting.

Most Runs

Test:

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar tops the charts with 820 runs in 7 matches with an unbelievable average of 136.7. With 386 runs, the best performance from Bangladesh has come through Mohammad Ashraful and he ranks 3rd after Rahul Dravid.

ODI:

All the top 5 spots are conquered by India here. Gautam Gambhir ranks top in the list with 592 runs, 2 centuries and 3 half centuries included, closely followed by Kohli, Sehwag, Tendulkar and Ganguly.

Highest Score

Test:

Only one double-century has been hit by any player in the matches between the two teams. The score is 248* and the player is Sachin Tendulkar, made it in Dec, 2004. Records and records! This legend has so many records!

ODI:

175 off 140 balls – 14 fours and 5 sixes: this innings is remembered as one of the best innings by Sehwag. Coincidentally, the Indian score of 370 made with the help of Sehwag’s extravagance is the highest ODI score between the two teams.

Most Wickets

Test:

Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan kept a check on the Bangladeshi batsmen with their swingers and Yorkers. Zaheer tops the list with 31 wickets of 7 matches, but Irfan Pathan for sure created havoc in the Bangladeshi dressing room by taking 18 wickets in just 2 matches!

ODI:

This is where Bangladesh reigns prominently. With only one Indian in the top 4, Ajit Agarkar ranks 2nd with 16 wickets in 8 matches and the crown goes to Mohammad Rafique who has taken 18 wickets in 14 matches.

Best Bowling

Test:

In an innings – Zaheer Khan – 7/87 in January, 2010
In a match – Irfan Pathan– 11/96 in December, 2004

ODI:

Stuart Binny came up with an exceptional and unthought-of performance on 17th June, 2014 and scalped 6 wickets for just 4 runs. His statistics read 4.4-2-4-6 and is the best bowling by an Indian as well.

Most catches and stumpings

Test:

Mahendra Singh Dhoni dismissed 15 players in 3 matches and this number is highest by any wicketkeeper from India or Bangladesh.

Rahul Dravid has taken 13 catches and has held on to the most number of chances.

ODI:

Suresh Raina has taken 6 catches from 10 matches and holds the record for the most number of catches in matches between the two teams.

Most centuries/Half-centuries

Test:

With 5 centuries, yet again Master Blaster tops the charts and is followed by Dravid and Gambhir with 3 and 2 centuries under their belt respectively. In the 50s department as well, he sits at the top with 5 more than 50+ scores in his name.

ODI:

Virat Kohli shows no mercy against Bangladesh and the live proof is that he has hit 3 centuries in only 7 matches against them and still tops the list. By the way he hit fifties in 2 matches, so you can understand how hard he makes the lives of the Bangla tigers. He also has hit 50 and more for 5 times which makes him top the list there as well.

This was the statistical analysis of the games these two cricketing nations have played till now. Hope the upcoming series brings serious ups and downs in it.
