India v England, 2nd Test, Day 1 – Statistical Highlights

India held the upper hand at the end of first day’s play in the second Test match after winning the crucial toss. Vishakhapatnam, which became India’s 24th Test venue witnessed tons from the home team’s Captain Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara who made England to toil. The pair added 226 runs for the 3rd wicket after two early wickets as India finished the day at 317/4. Pujara scored a century at a new Test venue for the 3rd consecutive game while Kohli remained unbeaten on 151. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the day’s play.
1 – Cheteshwar Pujara became the 1st player to score centuries on 3 different Indian grounds hosting their 1st Test match. Sachin Tendulkar, Clive Lloyd and Sir Everton Weekes have scored centuries at two Indian venues.
1.706 – Centuries/fifties ratio of Virat Kohli in Test cricket, 2nd best for any player. (Min: 10 centuries) Don Bradman’s 2.23 is the best 100s/50s ratio for a player in Tests.
2 – Vishakhapatnam became the 2nd Indian venue to host all the 3 formats in International cricket in a calendar year. Vizag hosted a T20I vs Sri Lanka in February and an ODI during last month against New Zealand. Kolkata’s Eden Gardens hosted an ODI, T20I and Test match in 2011.
3 – Number of 150 plus scores Virat Kohli has scored in 2016 in Tests, the joint most for any Indian in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar in 2002, 2004 and Virender Sehwag in 2004, 2008 have three 150+ scores. Kohli is also the first India captain to make three 150+ scores in Tests in a year.
3 – Number of instances in Tests since 2000 where India lost their openers by end of 5th over in the first innings of a Test match at home. Other two instances were vs Australia in 2004 at Mumbai and vs South Africa in 2008 at Ahmedabad.
4 – Number of Indians who have scored centuries on 3 different Indian grounds hosting their 1st Test match: Umrigar, Sachin, Pujara and Kohli. Sachin Tendulkar and Cheteshwar Pujara have scored on 3 different venues while Virat Kohli and Polly Umrigar scored on two venues.
5 – Virat Kohli now has a century in Tests and ODIs at 5 different venues including 3 in India. Sachin scored in 12 different venues including in 6 venues India, the only Indian ahead of Kohli. Rahul Dravid is the only other Indian who has scored tons in two formats at more than 2 venues. He has done in 3 venues (2 of them in India).
6 – Virat Kohli is only the 6th Indian to score a century in his 50th Test match. 3 of them including Kohli have converted it to 150.
7 – Number of left-handed batsmen England have in their playing XI of the Test, the most for any team against India in a Test match.
7 – Number of centuries Virat Kohli has scored as captain in Tests, the joint 3rd most by an Indian.

8 – Cheteshwar Pujara is now only the 8th player to score centuries on 3 different grounds hosting their 1st Test match. He is the 2nd Indian to be on the list after Sachin Tendulkar.
8 – Jayant Yadav became the 8th Indian to make Test and ODI debut at the same venue. He made his ODI debut at Vizag during NZ series. Last such player was Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made his ODI and Test debut at Chennai.
10 – Number of centuries Virat Kohli has scored across all formats (FC, List A & T20) in 2016. He is the first Indian to score 10 or more centuries in a calendar year in professional cricket since 2000. Sourav Ganguly scored 10 centuries in the year 2000 across all formats.
14 – Centuries scored by Virat Kohli, the 2nd most by any Indian in first 50 Test matches. Sunil Gavaskar had 20 hundreds at the end of his 50th Test.
21 – Number of Indians who scored 3000 runs in Test Cricket. Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara joined the list during the first session of this Test.

151* – Virat Kohli’s score at end of day 1 in this Test. He became the first Indian captain to score 150 runs on an opening day of a Test. Previous highest was 143* also by Kohli vs West Indies earlier this year.
2006 – Virat Kohli has 3 Test centuries in 2016. Last time an Indian captain scored 3 centuries in Tests in a calendar year was Rahul Dravid in 2006.
2010 – Last time before Kohli, an India scored more than 150 runs on the opening day of a Test was Virender Sehwag in 2010 vs New Zealand at Ahmedabad. He scored 173 runs before getting out after Tea on the first day.
