Sri Lanka’s hopes of a series win on Indian soil exhausted after losing their last eight wickets for just 55 runs from 160/2 when they looked like setting a huge target in front of India. Indian wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal played a key role in bringing India back into the game. Shikhar Dhawan’s rapid hundred along with young Shreyas Iyer helped India to register their 8th consecutive bilateral ODI series.

All the stats and numbers that were created during India’s record series win:

3 – Upul Tharanga became the 3rd player after Virat Kohli (1460) and Rohit Sharma (1293) to aggregate 1000 ODI runs in 2017. Tharanga aggregated 1011 runs in 25 innings in this format with two centuries and six fifties.


8 – This series win is India’s 8th consecutive bilateral ODI series win. They became only the 3rd team after Windies and Australia to win eight and more consecutive bilateral series in this format. Windies won 15 consecutive bilateral ODI series between 1980 and 1988 while Australia won eight in a row between 2009 and 2010.


8Rohit Sharma’s batting average while chasing in the bilateral ODI series deciders. His scores while chasing in those matches are 5, 4, 16 and 7. However, while batting first, Rohit scored 209, 70 and 147 respectively.


13 – Rohit Sharma’s 13 sixes in the series are the most by any Indian captain in a bilateral ODI series and the 3rd most in an ODI series/tournament. MS Dhoni held the record with nine sixes in the 5-match away series against New Zealand. Sourav Ganguly hit 16 and 15 sixes in the South Africa Tri-Series, 2001 and Cricket World Cup 2003 respectively.


13 – The 13 sixes of Rohit in this series are also the 5th most for India in a bilateral ODI series. Rohit hit 23 sixes against Australia in 2013 and 14 against them in the 2016 and 2017 series while MS Dhoni hit 17 sixes against Sri Lanka in 2005. The 13 sixes are also the most for an Indian in a 3-match series as no other player hit more than seven sixes in a series.


95 – Innings Shikhar Dhawan needed to complete 4000 runs in ODI cricket. He is the 2nd fastest for India after Virat Kohli (93 innings) and overall the 6th fastest.


139.5 – Batting average of Shikhar Dhawan in six bilateral ODI series deciders. His average in those games goes up to 139.5 while chasing with two centuries and a fifty in three innings.


1033 – Shikhar Dhawan’s runs in 2017 against Sri Lanka across formats. He became only the 2nd player to score 1000+ International runs in a calendar year against Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli scored 1183 runs across formats against the Lankans in this year only.
