India, on Saturday, inflicted an innings defeat on England in the fourth Test to wrap up the four-match series 3-1. Not many had given England a chance of challenging India let alone beating them in the Test after their performance in the previous two games and their players did very little to prove the critics wrong.

On a pitch that was anything but a rank-turned, England’s batsmen capitulated in a remarkable fashion. It took India less than a day to bowl out the visitors as they won the game by an innings and 25 runs to secure their place in the World Test Championship final. The writing was very much on the wall for England when they started their second innings 165 runs behind.

The visitors needed something special to claw their way back in the game but completely failed. They could only bat for 54.5 overs and were all out for 135. The score could have been too less had Dan Lawrence not provided some resistance towards the end with a fighting fifty. They were off to a disastrous start and were reeling at 30 for 4 at one stage.

Joe Root and Ollie Pope steadied the ship before Axar Patel struck to end their 35-run stand and open the floodgates. Pope and Root were dismissed in a space of three balls as England found themselves 6 down for 65 from 65 for 4. Lawrence and Ben Foakes then showed some resistance and took the score past the 100-mark before Axar dismissed the latter for 13.

England’s tail could not delay the inevitable for long either as India wrapped up the game inside three days. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel were England’s tormentors again, taking five wickets each.

Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar to the rescue

Earlier in the match, Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar rescued India with the bat by coming up with stunning knocks. In reply to England’s first innings total of 205, India were reeling at 146 for 6 before Pant and Sundar joined hands. The duo shared a 113-run stand to bail India out of trouble. Pant completed his first Test century in India before departing for 101.

Sundar then shared another century-plus stand with Axar but eventually ran out of partners and remained stranded on 96. His knock, however, helped India recover and put up 365 which turned out to be more than enough to inflict an innings defeat on the visitors.
