India extended their domination in the ongoing Vizag Test match against South Africa by posting a big total in the first innings. Mayank Agarwal (215) and Rohit Sharma (176) scored big tons but the next batsmen did struggle to score at a quick rate. India eventually declared their innings at 502/7 with 20 overs left in the day. The spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (2) and Ravindra Jadeja (1) struck early to leave the hosts reeling at 39/3 at stumps on day 2.
All the statistical highlights from another day that was dominated by India in the Vizag Test:
A day of records for Mayank-Rohit pair:
1 – Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma became the first opening pair to score 175+ runs apiece in the same Test innings. Overall, this is the 7th instance of two openers scoring 175+ in the same Test innings.
12 – Number of sixes that Mayank (6) and Rohit (6) collectively hit in this innings; the most by any opening pair in a Test inning. Australia in the 2003 Perth Test against Zimbabwe and New Zealand in the 2015 Sharjah Test against Pakistan had 11 sixes each hit by their openers.
317 – The partnership of 317 between Mayank and Rohit is only the 3rd triple century opening stand for India in Test cricket and the 9th highest for any wicket in this format.
A rare Indian feat by Mayank:
4 – Mayank Agarwal became only the 4th Indian to convert his maiden Test hundred into a double century. Karun Nair (303*), Vinod Kambli (224) and Dilip Sardesai (200*) are the other three players to convert their maiden Test ton into double ton or excess.
Rare dismissals for Rohit and Kohli:
1 – For the first time in his first-class cricket, Rohit Sharma was dismissed stumped. This was his 3rd stumping dismissal in International cricket in 2019. He was dismissed in this fashion four times before 2019 in Internationals but only once between 2011 and 2018.
1 – Virat Kohli was dismissed “caught & bowled” by the debutant Senuran Muthusamy. This was the first such dismissal for Kohli in his first-class career. Overall, Muthusamy became only the 3rd bowler to dismiss Kohli as his maiden Test wicket. Kagiso Rabada and Alzarri Joseph are the other two players whose maiden Test wicket was Kohli.
Rohit finds his name in rare records:
176 – Rohit Sharma’s 176 is the highest Test score by an Indian that came to an end with a stumping dismissal. The previous highest was 155 by Murali Vijay in the 2017 Delhi Test against Sri Lanka. However, in the overall list, Rohit’s 176 stands at 15th spot in the Test knocks that ended via stumping.
176 – Rohit’s 176 is also the 4th highest individual score for any player in their first innings as Test opener. Only Brendon Kuruppu (201*), Graeme Smith (200) and Shikhar Dhawan (187) have highest scores while opening for the first time in Test cricket.
