India vs Sri Lanka, 2017: 3rd T20I – Statistical Highlights

Sri Lanka finally displayed some fight in the T20I series but couldn’t stop India whitewashing them as they lost the game in Mumbai by five wickets which went down to the final over. Sri Lanka’s batting troubles continued as they managed to post only 136/8 after India elected to bowl first. The Sri Lankan bowlers managed to tame the Indian openers and put on the pressure but the Indian middle order took their side home with fours balls to spare.

Here are all the stats and numbers that were created during India’s series victory:

2 – Only the 2nd time India affected whitewash in a 3-match T20I series. They won the 3-match series in Australia under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. This is also the 2nd time Sri Lanka were on the receiving end on a whitewash for the 2nd consecutive time. They lost the 3-match series against Pakistan 0-3 before touring India.

8 – Sri Lanka’s defeat extended their losing streak in T20I format to eight defeats which is the joint 4th longest streak for any side. Zimbabwe lost 16 games between 2010 and 2013, Bangladesh lost 12 between 2007 and 2010 while U.A.E lost eight in a row between 2016 and 2017. Bangladesh also lost eight T20Is in a row till their win against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

11 – Rohit Sharma’s 11 sixes in this series are the most for a captain in a T20I series/tournament. He went past Graeme Smith’s ten sixes in the 2-match series against England in 2009. These 11 sixes are easily the most by an Indian in a bilateral T20I series. KL Rahul’s nine sixes in this series are the 2nd most for an Indian.

162 – Rohit Sharma’s 162 runs in this series are the 2nd most by a captain in bilateral T20I series. Kane Williamson aggregated 175 runs in the 3-match T20I series against Pakistan last year. Rohit’s 162 runs are also the most by an Indian captain in a T20I series/tournament surpassing MS Dhoni’s 154 in the WT20 2007.

18y 80d – At the age of 18 years and 80 days, Washington Sundar became the youngest Indian player to debut in a T20I match. The previous youngest T20I player for India was Rishabh Pant when he debuted at the age of 19 years and 120 days earlier in February this year.

18y 80d – By bowling the first over of the match, Sundar became the 2nd youngest spinner in International cricket to bowl the first over of a game. Afghanistan’s Mujeeb Zadran (16y 254d) recently bowled the first over of an ODI against Ireland in the 2nd game of his career.

37 – India’s 37 wins across all formats in International cricket are the 2nd most for any team in a calendar year behind Australia 38 wins in 2003.

2011 – This is India’s first win in the T20I format at the Wankhede and also the first win in a limited-overs International since October 2011. Since then, India played two ODIs and two T20Is before this match losing all of those.
