After registering a comprehensive win against West Indies in the third and final T20I, India were anticipated to carry their winning momentum in the ODI series. In the first match of the three-match ODI series at Chepauk, India stumbled upon the start as Sheldon Cottrell provided two early breakthroughs for his side.

Cottrell was successful in dismissing the in-form duo of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli in the powerplay itself. Rohit Sharma also walked back to the pavilion in the nineteenth over. In a state when the hosts were reeling in the middle, youngsters Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant steadied India’s ship by smashing 70 and 71 respectively. The duo was assisted by Kedar Jadhav’s sensible knock of 40 runs off 35 balls.

Jadhav was joined by Ravindra Jadeja, who was looking in decent touch after scoring 21 runs off 21 balls. However, the left-hander was run out by Roston Chase in the 48th over. Jadeja’s dismissal raised many eyebrows as he was initially not declared out by the on-field umpire. But the TV replays suggested that Jadeja had failed to make the crease and several West Indies players including skipper Pollard appealed for the same.

Kieron Pollard fumes at the decision

West Indies players were fuming as the on-field umpire did not go upstairs initially. It was after watching replays when the umpire finally decided to take the third umpire’s route. It seemed that the on-field umpire already had made his decision of adjudging Jadeja ‘not-out’ until he saw TV replays. Jadeja was eventually declared out by the third umpire. The captains of both the teams– Virat Kohli and Kieron Pollard seemed irked by the on-field umpire’s indecisiveness in the match.

India was able to amass 288 runs on the board at the loss of eight wickets due to impressive knocks from Iyer, Pant and Jadhav. It will be an uphill task for West Indies to chase a competitive total of 288 at Chepauk as the wicket will get tricky as the match progresses in its later stages.
