India are once again struggling in England against the moving ball and the story of 2011 and 2014 tour is being repeated yet again. They will have to get their problems sorted somehow and fight with fire to fire as still three Tests are left in this series and all is not entirely lost. However, former England cricketer Michael Vaughan also feels the same as he believes that there is a lot of class in their line-up and they are over-complicating matters currently.

Apart from Virat Kohli, none of the Indian batsmen has so far scored 100 runs in three innings so far. They have flirted with the ball outside the off-stump a lot of times and it might have become a mental thing for them. The likes of Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane who were exceptional in the last tour are completely looking a pale shadow of themselves which is why Vaughan is of the opinion that they have an ability to drag England in this series.

“India’s top seven batsmen have great ability but so far they have been sitting ducks for James Anderson. They are waiting for the unplayable ball to arrive which has made them timid and nervous at the crease,” he wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

India have to simplify their batting

Michael Vaughan also believed that they overcomplicating matters by worrying more about the conditions in England. He advised them to go back to the basics and get their mindset correct while also stating that it is very important for a batsman to be technically strong while playing the swinging ball which is what the Dravids and the Tendulkars did successfully.

“Sometimes you can over-complicate batting. We have seen it from England teams playing overseas in the past. But India have to simplify batting. The more they worry about English conditions the worse they will become. They have to go back to basics and rely on three or four scoring shots. They have to understand that to play through the off-side when the ball is swinging away you have to be very correct technically,” he further added.

As it stands now, it is looking extremely tough for the visitors to save the Lord’s Test but if they can bat better compared to the other three innings, it will at least help them going into the third Test.
