It won’t be an overstatement to call the 2018 tour of South Africa was India’s best in the African nation where they registered their maiden ODI series by a 5-1 margin and won the T20I series as well by 2-1. Even in the Test series, India had their chances with their bowlers taking all the 60 wickets by were on losing side with a score line of 1-2. Virat Kohli led the team from the front by amassing 871 runs in the 11 games he played on the tour while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and the wrist spinners managed to restrict the home team’s batsmen.

Here we look at all the stats and numbers that were recorded during India’s tour of South Africa:

1Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled the first over and also the last over of this tour. He started with a maiden over in the Cape Town Test in which he dismissed Dean Elgar. Bhuvneshwar brought an end to the tour by defending 19 runs in the final T20I and dismissed the Christiaan Jonker on the last ball.


8 – India’s eight wins in this South Africa tour are the 2nd most for them in an International tour against the home side. India won nine out of nine matches against Sri Lanka in the 2017 Sri Lanka tour.


8 – The eight wins by India in this tour are the most number of wins for a visiting team in a tour against South Africa. Australia defeated the home team in seven of the ten matches they played during their 2001/02 tour.


10 – Number of times India bowled out South Africa on this tour. These are the most times India bowled out the home team in an International tour. India bowled out Australia in the 1977/78 tour and Sri Lanka in the 2017 tour on nine occasions.

This is the 2nd instance of a visiting team bowling out South Africa ten times in a tour. South Africa were bowled out in all six innings in Test series and four times in the ODI series. Australia also bowled out Saffers ten times during their 1935/36 tour of South Africa.


12 – Hardik Pandya is the only player to feature in all 12 matches played on the tour. Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli missed out in the 2nd and 3rd T20I matches while Rohit Sharma got dropped from the final Test match.


132 – The 132 wickets by India in this tour are the most by them against the home team in an International tour. India took 117 wickets against the home sides in the 2007 tour of Europe (Ireland, Scotland and England).


871 – The 871 runs by Virat Kohli on this tour are the most by any player in a tour of South Africa. No other player scored more than 800 runs against the home team in a tour of South Africa.


871 – Virat Kohli’s 871 runs on this tour are the most by any captain in an International tour. South African captain Graeme Smith scored 803 runs in the 2003 Europe tour against the home team.
