Australian pacer Andrew Tye cost quite a lot of bucks for the Kings XI Punjab management and his start in the 2018 edition wasn’t the prettiest. But against a quality Sunrisers Hyderabad lineup, Tye pulled off a breathtaking spell, conceding at less than 6 an over whilst the required rate was over 9.5.

But the real star of the game was the Universe Boss Chris Gayle, who absolutely hammered the best bowling attack of the season in style. He stroked his 21st T20 hundred and also the 1st ton of this edition. Andrew Tye was full of praises for the legend who displayed some outstanding power-hitting.

He complimented Gayle for carrying his bat through the innings and helping his side post a mammoth total. Probably the best spinner in T20 cricket right now, Rashid Khan, got smacked for 55 runs in 4 overs courtesy the Gayle-storm. He said that Gayle’s approach was pretty smart.

“Gayle played to perfection. He made sure that he stayed there until the end. You don’t often see (spinner Rashid) Khan get hit for more than 25 in one over. To make Rashid concede that many runs (55 in four overs) were awesome,” Tye said at the post-match news conference on Thursday.

“I think he went about it very well. He knew that once he got through the powerplay, the spin would come on and then he got into the rhythm against the spin. I think he was very smart about it not to take too many risks against the Pacers (early on),” he said.

The knuckleball was working for me, so I stuck to it: Tye

When a reporter asked Tye what he would’ve done when Chris Gayle is in such kind of form, he said he would try and get him off the strike. He also said that it’s important for him to try and pick his wickets as Gayle would be eagerly waiting for the spinners to come in.

“I guess you could try and get him off the strike, but at the same time as pace bowlers, you want to get him out because you know you have spin to come and he is lining up to attack them. It is different for every pitch you play on, tonight might have been the case of going short at him or could have been the case of just try him play some big shots and make him miss one,” Tye explained.

One of the features of Andrew Tye’s incredible performance was his knuckleball, which helped him scalp Kane Williamson and Deepak Hooda. “I try and figure out what is working for me on the day. Today was knuckleball and I stuck with that. Sometimes it works, sometimes you get hit with the crowd and you look like an idiot, but that’s alright,” he said.
