New Zealand and Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper, on Sunday, said Sachin Tendulkar was his idol when he was a youngster. Currently, Kane Williamson is leading the Sunrisers troops who stand tall at the top of the table with three wins in three games. Williamson was announced as their skipper after David Warner was banned from the ongoing edition of IPL.
When Kane Williamson made his debut for the Kiwis against India, the Indian team had the likes of Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman. On his debut, eight years ago, he scored 131 in the first innings and did not get the chance to bat in the second innings in Ahmedabad. Now, he is among the most highly rated players in the world and is a part of the Fab Four group that consists of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, and Joe Root.
Williamson was blown away by Tendulkar
Talking about the cricketers he has liked, Williamson said, “Some of my favourite cricketers have been Indians. Indian player Sachin Tendulkar, I met him during my debut for New Zealand. We were playing against each other, and I was looking at what he was doing. That was a bit of distraction,” Williamson told reporters during a promotional event of Rupa, who are also sponsors for Sunrisers.
“The first time I met him was in my debut game for New Zealand. I was watching him on the field, wondering what he was doing. It was a really nice experience. He is a legend of the game,” said Williamson.
VVS Laxman, who he also mentioned in the list and was part of the Indian team he made his debut against, is now working with Williamson as the mentor for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The calm and composed nature of the two individuals is reflected in the Sunrisers’ approach in the IPL.
“There were so many great players in the team. Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman…they are such fantastic people…open to talk to about the game of cricket. I was 19-20 and it was great opportunity to get alongside the legends of the game and pick their brains,” Williamson added.
