The Kolkata Knight Riders seem to be the only franchise moving out of the IPL 2018 auctions with doubts in mind. While all the teams managed to get their plans executed at the auctions, the KKR think tank seem to have missed out on the trick. They could not complete their quota of players with the purse amount that was assigned to them leading in to the IPL 2018 auctions.

All the franchises had a purse of INR 80 crore as they headed in to the auctions. The teams were allowed to pick up a maximum of 25 players. This includes a maximum of 8 overseas players.  Interestingly, only four teams could manage to bag 25 players in the auctions. While most teams got more than 20 players on their rosters, Kolkata Knight Riders could only purchase 19 players.

Much to their relief, they did manage to rope in 7 overseas players. Prior to the auctions KKR had retained the West Indies duo of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. And at the auctions, they have bagged some big names in Australia’a Mitchell Starc and Chris Lynn. The big question for them, though, remains their captaincy conundrum.

Big buys and the average expenditure

Talking about the players they bagged at the auction, Chris Lynn fetched the highest bid of INR 9.6 crore. Lynn was brought back to the Kolkata roster via the RTM option. Next in line was Mitch Starc, who fetched a deal of INR 9.4 crore. Among the Indian lot, Dinesh Karthik bagged a whopping sum of INR 7.4 crore. Karthik is also in line to be named as the captain of the franchise. Whether that happens or not, remains to be seen.

Among the other big players they managed to bring to their camp, the names of Kuldeep Yadav and Robin Uthappa stand out. They also got the services of Piyush Chawla. Interestingly, these players have played for KKR before.

In all, Kolkata Knight Riders shelled out their total purse of INR 80 crore at the auctions for their 19 players. Hence, their average expenditure on each turned out to be INR 4,214,000 or INR 4.21 crore.
