When the announcements for the IPL 2018 auction rules were made, all the franchises started narrowing down their list of players they would want to retain. While most teams did so, the Rajasthan franchise looked to create a new setup altogether. Needless to concede, their thought processes were affected by the spot fixing controversy they were hit with a couple of years ago.

The Rajasthan Royals only retained Steve Smith ahead of the auctions. However, as the auctions panned out, they did manage to get back some of their trusted senior core members of the side. They got back Ajinkya Rahane to their roster and that certainly adds a lot of solidity to their camp. Also, they made a few very interesting overseas buys which can be tipped as smart master strokes.

All the franchises had a purse of INR 80 crore as they headed in to the auctions. The teams were allowed to pick up a maximum of 25 players. This includes a maximum of 8 overseas players.  Interestingly, only four teams could manage to bag 25 players in the auctions. Rajasthan Royals could only buy 23 players at the auctions. This included 8 overseas players.

Big buys and the average expenditure

After the auctions, the Royals are left out with a purse of INR 1.65 crore. They roped in the services of English all-rounder Ben Stokes, who proved to be the costliest player at the IPL auctions this year as well. Stokes fetched INR 12.5 crore at the auctions. Also, the Royals made a very good move by shelling out a huge sum of INR 11.5 crore for Jaydev Unadkat.

Unadkat was the premier pacer for the Steve Smith-led Rising Pune Supergiant last year. Also, young cricketer Jofra Archer fetched a deal worth INR 7.2 crore. At the same time, Indian cricketer Sanju Samson raked in INR 8 crore from the Royals at the IPL 2018 auctions.

In all, Rajasthan Royals shelled out INR 78.35 crore at the auctions for their 23 players. Hence, their average expenditure on each turned out to be INR 3,134,000 or INR 3.134 crore.
