IPL 2018: The bond between Nitish Rana and Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson and Nitish Rana are currently playing in the eleventh season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) respectively. Both players have dished out some significant performances in the middle order and have played match-winning knocks for their respective franchise. Both have a unique connection between them as their families have been connected ever since their childhood.

Vishwanath and Anil, the father of Sanju and Nitish respectively, have been constables in Delhi Police. While, Anil, a fast-bowling all-rounder himself, trained Nitish, Vishwanath took charge of Sanju and his elder brother Sally. Yesterday KKR and the Royals were pitted against each other at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur and both families had the privilege to watch their sons live.

While Rana impressed by picking a couple of wickets and scoring 35 useful runs, Samson couldn’t quite replicate his form from the previous game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and perished cheaply. Recently, Anil reminisced the memories in a recent media interaction.

The age-old friendship

“We would meet each other during practice. Viswanath was part of the football team and I played cricket. Most days I would be coming to practice and he would have finished or the other way around. When both the boys started playing cricket for their respective states and IPL teams, we renewed a friendship that had begun when we both represented Delhi Police,” Anil, a sub-inspector now, said.

Vishwanath also went down the memory lane and hailed the relationship between the two families. “Whenever I come to Delhi, I do call on Rana ji and Anil ji. Last year, I had visited their home. It was great to catch up and recall the good old days. We have common friends and we do get together whenever I come to Delhi to play football with my old colleagues,” he mentioned.
