The last couple of years haven’t been overwhelming for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They were handed a two-year suspension following which they didn’t take part in the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL). The likes of MS Dhoni and others shifted to other franchises. However, they made a comeback in this season’s IPL with the aim to re-stamp their authority.

They played their opening match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) and romped home courtesy of Dwayne Bravo’s masterclass in the death overs during CSK’s run chase. The team didn’t look back ever since and continued on their own merry way. They stuttered during the second-leg of the league phase but ensured that they cement their spot among the top two teams.

Chennai’s glorious run

They beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Qualifier 1 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 21 and qualified for the Grand Finale. Faf du Plessis, who hadn’t got many opportunities till then, scored a gutsy half-century and played till the very end to guide the team home. The teams again met at the same venue and CSK beat them for the fourth time.

Subsequently, MS Dhoni’s men also won the championship for the third occasion, equaling the Mumbai Indians (MI). Shane Watson played a stupendous hand of 117 runs from 57 balls, which helped CSK accomplish the target of 179 runs with a couple of overs to spare.

Brendon McCullum, who played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) this season, also congratulated the franchise. The former New Zealand-cricketer praised Watson and mentioned CSK’s comeback as one of the best ever in cricket. Here is what he wrote

“Congrats to @ChennaiIPL for this years @IPL success. This has to be one of the most amazing comeback results in our sport. Quite remarkable! Special mention to @ShaneRWatson33 who has been on some journey to be standing where he has today. Enjoy!”
