The Delhi Daredevils bagged the wooden spoon in IPL 2018. While their results have been the worst, they have actually been the best when it comes to promoting the young talent. The future Indian stars have come to the fore from the DD dugout. Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant, and Shreyas Iyer, showed great form throughout the season. And in the most recent game, another star in Abhishek Sharma took the limelight.

Abhishek Sharma is not a new name for the followers of the youth cricket. The 17 year old all-rounder has already made a big name for himself at the U19 level. He got his first opportunity in the IPL against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the match, he hammered an unbeaten 46 off just 19 deliveries with 3 fours and four sixes.

Recalling the moment, in a video for the Delhi Daredevils, Abhishek remarked that it was the DD coach Ricky Ponting who told him that he would get a game. He recalled how he had asked for an extended batting session in the nets on the eve of the game.

“Ahead of the game, I was batting in the nets during the team’s practice session at Ferozshah Kotla. I urged Ricky sir (Ricky Ponting) to allow me to bat a little more. So, he said yes. During that session, I batted superbly. Following this Ricky sir hinted that I might get to play tomorrow,” Abhishek Sharma revealed.

“On the match day, he (Ricky Ponting) texted me that I am in playing XI. I became very excited,” he added.

On reactions from the dugout

Commenting on the same lines, Abhishek Sharma noted that he had been bowling more in the nets than wielding his willow. Hence, when he hit sixes at will in the game, the players in the DD dugout were stunned to see him perform so well with the bat.

“During the team’s net session, I usually used to bowl much than batting. The seniors and foreigners didn’t know much that I know batting as well. After my debut all the players were left in shocked as they realised that I can bat also,” the youngster remarked.
