As the much anticipated IPL mega auction ended at its second day here in Bengaluru, all the teams to a certain extent managed to buy the players that were in their scheme of things before the auction. The team which was known to do blunders at the auction table, Delhi Daredevils was quite efficient in their buying this time around courtesy Ricky Ponting, head coach for the team from the capital. The team went for the T-20 specialists with few veterans to form the right balance of the squad as they ended up picking the complete squad of 25 players with still a purse of 1.6 crore left with them.
Top Buys for Delhi Daredevils
Some of their top buys from the auction included the likes of explosive Glenn Maxwell (9 crore), young South African sensation Kagiso Rabada(4.2 crore) whose bid was matched using a RTM card and the leg spinner Amit Mishra (4 crore). They used the other RTM card for the Indian speedster, Mohammad Shami who was bought for a cheap price of 3 crore.
Batsmen: Gautam Gambhir, Prithwi Shaw, Manjot Kalra, Colin Munro, Jason Roy.
Delhi team can certainly boast about their bunch of batsmen as they have the much needed firepower in the form of Munro and Roy which can be ably supported by young guns like Prithwi and Manjot. They do fancy a lot of options in terms of flexibility in their batting order with a experienced campaigner who has lead KKR to the title twice in previous editions in the form of Gambhir who will even lead the side as he returns to his home based franchise.
All-rounders: Vijay Shankar, Glenn Maxwell, Gurkeerat Singh, Rahul Tewatia, A Sharma, Chris Morris, Daniel Christian.
This is the most important part of any team especially in the T-20 format and Delhi have done considerably well in mustering a lot that has a blend of experience and youth to support their chances in this year’s IPL. Players like Maxwell, Morris and Christian, can tong the ball hard and are able to aid the bowling with some handy overs, are always a luxury for any team.
Wicketkeepers: Naman Ojha, Rishabh Pant.
Daredevils have gone in with two specialist Wicketkeepers who are at the same time handy batsmen as well given the known exploits of Pant, who recently smashed the fastest hundred by any Indian in a T-20 game. On a Kotla wicket where the bounce is a bit uneven, Ojha is a good buy considering his skills behind the wickets.
Bowlers: Amit Mishra, Mohammad Shami, Trent Boult, Kagiso Rabada, Avesh Khan, Jayant Yadav, Shahabaz Nadeem, Sayan Ghosh, Harshal Patel, S Lamichhane .
This looks a sorted bowling attack with some fierce speed in the form of Shami, Rabada and Boult and some good spinners who are doing well for their respective national team. The franchise made an interesting pick by going in for S Lamichhane, a Nepali bowler, the first to be bought in the history of the league. If the team is to do well, the bowling lineup need to step up to the occasion to help the cause for this Delhi team.
