The eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has reached its final cusp of the league stages, as all the franchises are going all guns blazing to claim their spot in the playoffs. The Mumbai Indians (MI) racked up a spectacular win against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) last night to keep themselves alive in the tournament. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah bowled an extremely important match-winning spell that helped his side seal the victory by 3 runs.
Pollard finally arrives at the party, after initial MI collapse
The MI opener provided a steady start to their team after losing a crucial toss. However, the Purple Cap holder, Andrew Tye blistered the opposition by taking 3 wickets in two overs. The MI skipper Rohit Sharma was also dismissed early, which then brought the returning Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya on the crease. The duo played a responsible partnership to help the team post a fightable total.
The West Indian veteran who has not been in the best of his form in this season so far contributed with an explosive half-century, which came off just 22 balls and also the lifted the confidence in the MI dugout. The elder Pandya brother also played a crucial cameo that helped the hosts score 186 runs in the 20 overs.
Rahul’s 94 goes in vain as KXIP’s middle-order woes continue
For the Kings, the in-form opener KL Rahul once again looked to be in a sublime touch as he provided an explosive start to his team. However, his partner Chris Gayle was once again dismissed early on, after scoring 18 runs. The visitors looked to be cruising through with the chase easily as Rahul and Aaron Finch compiled a steady partnership of 111-runs, but the required run-rate was certainly reaching to the steady. The run-scoring pressure forced Finch to lose his wicket and that gave an opening to the hosts.
However, the KXIP opener was not retrieving from playing his shots as he slashed Ben Cutting for three back-to-back boundaries in the 18th over. Bumrah who was absolutely sensational last night took the prized scalp of Rahul, who was dismissed for a splendid 94 off 60 balls. He bowled superbly and picked up 3 crucial wickets and gave away just 15 runs in his spell, for which the fast bowler was also awarded the Man of the Match. After the match, Bumrah took to Twitter to share his strategy of handling the pressure nicely in the important death overs stage.
