The game between the Kings turned out to be a thriller with the Kings XI Punjab edging out by four runs despite an MS Dhoni special that scared to take away the game from their hands. Chris Gayle struck a 33-ball 63 on his debut for KXIP as they finished with 197/7 after yet another middle-order collapse. CSK’s equation came down to 65 needed in the last 21 balls from where MS Dhoni produced a special knock. The CSK skipper scored 46 in the next 16 balls he faced to take his team to 193/5, four runs short of the KXIP’s total.

All the stats and numbers that were recorded during yet another thriller involving CSK in this season:

3 – Only the 3rd time MS Dhoni remained unbeaten during an unsuccessful run-chase in the IPL. He scored 63* against MI in the 2013 IPL final where CSK lost by 23 runs and 42* in the 2014 Qualifier 2 where CSK lost to KXIP by 24 runs.

4Chennai Super Kings’ 4-run loss in this game is the shortest margin of defeat for them in the IPL. The Kings XI Punjab defeated CSK by seven runs in the 2012 game at the Chepauk.

22Chris Gayle’s 22-ball fifty in this game is his joint 2nd fastest fifty in the IPL. His fastest fifty came off 17 balls during his unbeaten 175 against PWI in 2013.

50 – Imran Tahir completed 50 wickets in the IPL with the two wickets he took in this game. He became the 2nd overseas leg-spinner to bag 50 wickets in the IPL.

79*MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 79 in this game is his highest individual score in the IPL. His previous highest score in the IPL was 70* against RCB in the 2011 season which also came in the losing cause. This was also the highest T20 score for Dhoni surpassing the 73* for Jharkhand against Tripura in 2007.

79* – MS Dhoni’s 79* is the 2nd highest individual score for any captain in an unsuccessful run-chase in the IPL. Murali Vijay scored 89 at this very venue in 2016 when his team lost to RCB by one run.

158Suresh Raina’s 158 consecutive Twenty20 appearances for Chennai Super Kings came to an end with this game. He is the only player to feature in 150+ consecutive T20 matches for a team.

390 – The match aggregate of 390 runs is the 3rd highest in an IPL game at the PCA Stadium in Mohali and the highest since 2010. The KXIP-CSK and KXIP-RR matches in 2008 season produced 447 and 401 runs respectively.
