The Mumbai Indians have made it a habit to keep their fans interested till the very last game of the league stages in the IPL. Almost every season, they have a poor start but then start to bloom in the later stages. In the IPL 2018, they did the same and kept their hopes pinned until their final league game against the Delhi Daredevils. Much to their disappointment, they failed to cross the final hurdle and saw themselves knocked out of the race for the playoffs.
Coming in to the game, the Delhi Daredevils had nothing to lose. They played risk free cricket and ended up being the party spoilers for the Mumbai Indians. They opted to bat first and posted 174/4 in their stipulated 20 overs. Yet again, it was Rishabh Pant who was the star performer for the double Ds. Pant scored a brisk 64 in the game and got support from Vijay Shankar, who scored an unbeaten 43.
In the run chase, the Mumbai Indians could never really get in to the chase. They lost their top order players very cheaply. Only Evin Lewis managed to score a decent 48 to keep the visitors interested in the run chase. Hardik Pandya also came up with a hopeful 27 later in the game. Ben Cutting provided the final flourish with a 20-ball 37 but ended up falling short by 11 runs. With the defeat, Mumbai Indians got knocked out of the tournament.
Here are the Delhi Daredevils Player Ratings for the match:
Prithvi Shaw – 2/10
Prithvi Shaw has had a very good debut stint in the IPL. However, he failed to finish things on a high for himself. He hit two fours first up in the innings and then ended up getting dismissed on 12 as a result of an uncalled run out. The tournament has certainly been a big learning curve for him.
Glenn Maxwell – 3/10
Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell was given one more opportunity in the tournament. He has had a terrible run in the tournament for his new franchise, the Delhi Daredevils. The DD camp showed faith in him and retained him in the side to see if he can finish things on a high. But Maxwell let his side down yet again and could only score 22 before getting dismissed.
Shreyas Iyer – 3/10
The DD skipper Shreyas Iyer has been one of the top performers for the team this season. He looked very calm on the field in the second innings. He shuffled his bowlers very well in the game. Earlier in the game, the DD skipper failed to get going with bat in hand. He could only score 6 in the 10 balls that he faced.
Rishabh Pant – 9/10
Rishabh Pant has been the best performer for the Delhi Daredevils in the match. The in-form batsman showed his excellent batting skills yet again. Pant hammered another fifty in the tournament and in the process, he also regained the Orange Cap. Pant scored 64 off just 44 balls with four fours and as many number of sixes.
Vijay Shankar – 8/10
During the first innings in the match, all eyes were on the hard hitting southpaw Rishabh Pant. Many did not notice that Pant got the ideal support from Vijay Shankar. The veteran all-rounder scored an unbeaten 43 off just 30 deliveries in the game. He hit two sixes and two fours in the innings.
Abhishek Sharma – 4/10
Abhishek Sharma got yet another game to his name but did not have a very big role to play. He arrived at the crease in the final stages of the DD innings. He remained unbeaten on 15 off 10 balls with a six credited to his name in the match.
Harshal Patel – 7/10
Harshal Patel was very impressive in the previous game. He did not get a chance to bat in the match. With the ball in hand, Patel bowled just 2.3 overs and went for 28 runs. In the final over, he was hit for a six that gave some serious scare to the hosts. But he then managed to cover up with the big wicket of Ben Cutting. He also bagged the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah.
Amit Mishra – 9.5/10
Amit Mishra was the star of the show for the Delhi Daredevils with the ball. The veteran leggie brought all his experience to good use on the day. He returned with phenomenal numbers of 3/19 in the match. He accounted for the wickets of Ishan Kishan, Evin Lewis, and Hardik Pandya.
Liam Plunkett – 3/10
English all-rounder Liam Plunkett was back in to the side for the game. However, the English cricketer had a rough run with the ball. He bowled 3 overs in the match and ended up conceding 27 runs. He did not get any wicket to his name in the game.
Sandeep Lamichhane – 9/10
Young Nepalese leggie Sandeep Lamichhane got another go in the tournament and he continued to impress with the ball. After being hit for a four and six in the first two balls of the innings, he came back well to dismiss Suryakumar Yadav in the very same over. He also took the wickets of Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya. He finished with figures of 3/36 in the four overs that he bowled.
Trent Boult – 7.5/10
