The second weekend of the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) produced some exciting and thrilling encounters for the absolute joy of the cricket fans. Yesterday’s two matches ended up being most run-heavy games contested so far in the tournament so far.

In the opening game between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the M.Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, the former failed to record their second win of the competition. The visiting Royals team ran past the home side after posting a huge total of 217 runs, with the help of some explosive and remarkable batting by their middle-order batsman Sanju Samson.

The Samson Show goes past Nitish Rana’s record

The RCB skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field first, pretty similarly as has been the trend so far in the tournament. The Rajasthan Royals team got off to a decent start by scoring 102 runs with the loss of three wickets in the 13 overs. After which, Samson decided to break the shackles and started smashing the opposition bowlers for some powerful sixes. He reached the score of 65, without even scoring a single four, instead, he smashed  8 monstrous sixes in different parts of the ground.

Samson now holds the record for scoring the most runs without hitting a four in an IPL match. Previously, Nitish Rana achieved this rare milestone, when he scored 62 runs while playing for Mumbai Indians last year and similarly ended up hitting no fours in his knock of 62 runs off 34 balls against the Kings XI Punjab in 2017. Samson scored his four of the inning off a terrific yorker bowled by RCB bowler Chris Woakes.

The Kerala wicket-keeper batsman played a spectacular unbeaten inning in which he scored 92 runs with an explosive strike rate of more than 200, which included a scintillating tally of 10 sixes and 2 fours. At the back of the powerful Samson Show, RR posted a huge total of 217 runs in the given 20 overs.

RCB batters stumble in a high scoring run-chase

In reply, RCB lost the key wicket of their opener Brendon McCullum very early in the opening over. Then the RCB skipper Virat Kohli joined the crease and started attacking the RR bowlers from the very first ball. But after Kohli and AB de Villiers’ dismissals, the hosts looked to be in all sought of trouble in the heavy run-chase. RR defeated RCB by 19 runs, to record their second win in the tournament and that too while defending a target.
