Cricket has become a commercial product as the game has progressed. Theme songs and promotional music are being churned out to provide an entertaining dimension to the game. However, at times, the songs are similar to the ones released earlier. Meanwhile, a team by the name of Indian Singers’ Rights Association (ISRA) is trying to spread awareness surrounding claiming royalties for the same.
A law surrounding the matter has been passed back in 2012 when the copyrights act allowed the singers to ask for compensation for using songs for advertisement performances. Recently, as per reports in The New Indian Express, Sanjay Tandon, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ISRA, recently mentioned that the IPL teams were once taken to court after which they paid the royalties.
The stern step by ISRA
“Radio stations, TV channels, and music platforms like Gaana and Raaga were among the first companies we approached. And then, of course, came the others like IPL who were clearly using songs for commercial purposes” he remarked. He also mentioned that barring the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), no other team paid the dues. “The other teams didn’t, but we got the dues the very next year from all of them, after taking them to court” Tandon mentioned.
The CEO also sounded agitated by the complacency of the companies towards adherence to the law. Subsequently, they have pledged to take legal actions against them as well. The law was circulated on June 21, 2012, which was a major boost for the companies. However, the disgust of the music creators is understandable especially after not getting their dues.
“From the coming year, we will be targetting radio stations and TV channels. We’ve given them ample time to understand regulations, and if they won’t adhere to the law, we’ll take them to court and make sure they do. The song belongs to the composer and lyricist, who share half of the revenue with the music label they give the track to.” he added.
