The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) played their last match against the Delhi Daredevils (DD) at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi. The encounter was a must win for Virat Kohli’s boys in order for them to cling on to their slender chance of qualifying for the playoffs. The Daredevils were already eliminated following their defeat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the same venue.

Shreyas Iyer’s men had nothing to gain from the match, apart from pride, but RCB had their campaign at stake and desperately needed a victory. Delhi notched 181 runs for the loss of four wickets, which is not a modest target by any stretch of the imagination. Rishabh Pant and IPL debutant Abhishek Sharma picked the bones out of the RCB bowlers and put forth a competitive score for RCB to trace down.

The stupendous knocks by Kohli and de Villiers

The visitors lost a couple of quick wickets in the form of Parthiv Patel and Moeen Ali, which somewhat exerted pressure on them. Nevertheless, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers didn’t let the situation unnerve them. The duo brought forth their experience and kept chipping away at the target without dropping much sweat. Kohli played a stupendous hand of 70 runs off 40 balls.

Moreover, they built a stand of 118 runs off 64 balls, which made RCB the firm favourites to win the match. However, the RCB skipper was nipped out by Amit Mishra. The wicket didn’t ruffle de Villiers at the other hand and he carried on his own merry way and raced to a knock 72 runs, which was garnished with six sixes and four boundaries. He also helped RCB breach the target with an over to spare.

The knocks by the stalwarts left Sundar Pichai, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Google, in awe and he couldn’t hold himself back from showering the duo with accolades for their exhibition of stroke-play. The 45-year old took to Twitter and replied to Virat Kohli’s tweet earlier. Here is what he wrote

“Was lucky to watch it live, you and @ABdeVilliers17 made it look so easy! and with classic cricketing shots too, really enjoying #IPL2018 this year”
