Chennai Super Kings (CSK) began their comeback season by winning matches on the trot but have lost their way a bit as the tournament has progressed. The skipper MS Dhoni has constantly urged his bowlers to step up and was visibly miffed over them after they failed to defend the above par total against Rajasthan Royals (RR) a couple of days ago. The game went down to the wire and they eventually lost off the penultimate delivery of the match courtesy the overthrow from Shane Watson.

The hosts needed 2 runs off the same number of deliveries and the ball was smacked by Jos Buttler to the covers where Watson was stationed. He ran to take the quick single even as the Australian aimed at the stumps unnecessarily even when there was no one behind the stumps to cover. He missed the throw and the overthrow meant that CSK had lost the match. Dhoni was clearly not happy with him as he nodded his head looking at Watson in disagreement.

First time Dhoni lost his cool

Sunil Gavaskar, in his column for Times of India, believed that MS Dhoni lost his cool after Shane Watson’s throw and lamented the bowlers and fielders for the loss in the post-match presentation ceremony. “For the first time, the usually unflappable Mahendra Singh Dhoni lost his cool after the Rajasthan Royals beat his team with a delivery left in the game as he gathered the ball from the deep after Buttler had completed the two runs that gave the Royals a truly extraordinary win,” he wrote.

The former Indian cricketer also felt that if Watson had only collected the ball and not thrown, the new batsman would’ve come on strike with the score tied and things might have been different.

“If Watson hadn’t thrown the ball it would have meant the scores were tied with one ball left and with a new batsman at the crease who hadn’t as yet faced a single delivery and who in fact had been dismissed the first ball he faced in his previous two games and if that had happened again then the match could have gone to the super over and who knows what would have happened then,” Gavaskar further wrote.

As it turned out, Buttler stole an extra run after the throw was missed and Royals sealed the thrilling victory over the Men in Yellow to leave Dhoni frustrated.
