The Sunrisers Hyderabad have always been a team to watch out for in the IPL auction. They set themselves some clear goals and targets going into the auction. Head coach Tom Moody is a very practical man and knows exactly what he wants. The inputs from Batting mentor, VVS Laxman, and bowling coach Muthiah Muralidharan have always come in handy for this franchise.

Earlier, ‘Deccan Chargers’ was the franchise that represented Hyderabad. The Sunrisers never had options aplenty in the auctions as they made their entry into the league mid-way. But now, with quite a few options available, they looked quite good. They were one of the smartest teams in the auction and have built a strong, balanced squad.

Retention

The team was also very smart with their retentions. They retained their skipper David Warner who has been prolific for them over the years. SRH also won the coveted title in 2016 under his leadership and it was the season which defined Warner as a capable leader. They also retained their only other player Bhuvneshwar Kumar who is one of the best bowlers in India currently.

Most recognizable players bought

Sunrisers Hyderabad shelled out a whopping amount of Rs. 9 Crore for Rashid Khan by using Right to Match (RTM) card. The decision was obvious given the variety he brings to the table with his magical leg-spin bowling. SRH going for only one overseas pace bowler was the surprisng move as they continued to keep faith on the Indian contingent with the ball in hand. The lot of all-rounders like Yusuf Pathan, Carlos Brathwaite and Mohammad Nabi were absolutely steal buys for the franchise which will surely reap rewards for them in the upcoming season.

Batsmen

Sunrisers bought Manish Pandey for Rs. 11 Crore which is a good buy as the youngster is a capable finisher and can also guide the team in difficult circumstances. They also used RTM for Shikhar Dhawan before going for the young lot of Ricky Bhui, Sachin Baby and Tanmay Agarwal. The franchise also procured the services of New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson.

All-rounders

Probably, the best group of all-rounders were picked in the auction by Sunrisers. They picked Shakib Al Hasan for a mere Rs. 2 Crores which was an absolutely brilliant move given his ability with both bat and ball. Yusuf Pathan and Deepak Hooda are also decent buys as they provide the finishing kick doen the order with the bat. Nabi, Carlos Brathwaite and Chris Jordan were the other all-rounders added to the dynamics of the team.

Wicket-keepers

Wriddhiman Saha and Shreevats Goswami are the ones who will handle the job behind the wickets for Sunrisers. Both the players are the specialists and they have covered this aspect of the game perfectly. Saha is an able T20 player with the bat as well and has the ability to clear the fence frequently if required.

Bowlers

The bowling attack of the franchise consists of the local players completely apart from Billy Stanlake. They bought the likes of Siddharth Kaul, Basil Thampi, Sandeep Sharma and  T Natarajan who are the future stars of the country. Even Syed Khaleel Ahmed was an impressive buy for them who set the stage ablaze in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Rashid Khan will be assisted by Bipul Sharma and Mehdi Hasan in the spin department along with Mohammad Nabi as well.
