Delhi Daredevils had a disastrous season this year. With Gautam Gambhir coming back after nearly 8 years, it was expected that DD could bring back its lost valour. Gambhir had won two titles with the Kolkata Knight Riders in this gap. Everyone believed that his experience could help turn the fortunes for Delhi.

However, Delhi was hit with the worst news just after their sixth game of the season. The team lost five out of the first six games under Gauti and he decided to step down as the captain. By then, things were already tough for Delhi and every game was a virtual knockout if they had to qualify for the playoffs.

Under the new leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the team couldn’t work any miracles. They ended last on the points table. Glenn Maxwell, who was expected to play an important role for the team both with the bat and the ball failed miserably. Maxwell couldn’t win even a single game on his own despite getting several chances.

Glenn Maxwell scored 169 runs in 12 games this year at an average of 14. His highest score of the season was only 47 showing how poorly he has performed. Glenn Maxwell has picked 5 wickets with the ball in as many games.

Here are the players DD could have bought instead of Glenn Maxwell:

1. Shane Watson

The Delhi Daredevils showed some interest in buying Shane Watson at the auction. Although CSK was bidding for him all the way through, DD should have tried better to bag this Aussie all-rounder. They gave up at INR 3.8 crores and Watson then went on to play for CSK.

Watson was absolutely destructive this season. He played a vital role in CSK clinching the title with two centuries to his name. Watson scored 555 runs in 15 games this year and also picked 6 wickets. He could have solved a lot of problems for DD had they brought him.
