In a thrilling opener of the eleventh season of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings beat their arch-rivals, Mumbai Indians by one wicket. DJ bravo’s match-winning performance turned things around for CSK, who were coming back into the IPL after their two-year ban. Despite falling wickets on the other end, Bravo scored a quick fire 68 off 30 balls. The Carribean all-rounder pulled off a stunner, from a situation where winning seemed almost impossible.

Winning the toss, the home team was asked to bat first. The Mumbai Indians couldn’t start their innings ideally as they lost both their star openers quite early. However, the young duo of Ishan Kishan and Surya Kumar Yadav added 78 runs for the third wicket. With Krunal Pandya’s aggressive 41, the Mumbai Indians posted a decent 165 on board.

However, things didn’t go well for the home team. Despite picking wickets at regular intervals, they failed to restrict CSK from chasing down their target. Kedar Jadhav’s back to back boundaries in the last over marked the Chennai Super Kings‘ comeback in style. Chennai managed to chase down MI’s target with a ball remaining.

Here’s what happened:

It surely was an unlucky day for the defending champions as a couple of things went against them. In the 19th over of CSK’s inning, Bumrah’s yorker rolled back on to the stumps but unfortunate for the Mumbai Indians, the bails didn’t come off. Just after Bravo smacked two sixes off the first two balls of the 19th over, Bumrah’s yorker brushed the stumps but the stumps didn’t lose their ground.  DJ Bravo was sent back to the pavilion, the very next ball.

Jadhav’s luck:

Earlier in the innings, Jadhav was caught LBW by Mayank Markande. The spinners appeal was turned down by the umpire. Unlucky for the Mumbai Indians, Rohit didn’t opt review.  After watching the replay, Rohit cursed himself for not reviewing the decision. This review cost the match for Rohit and Mumbai Indians.  Just after a few overs, Jadhav injured his hamstring and had to walk off the field. He came back in the 20th over following Bravo’s wicket, to finish the game.
