The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is most likely to get underway from the last week of March and will continue till the third week of May, a few days prior to the start of the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. However, the General Elections in the country during that time may shift the tournament to South Africa or the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In the meantime, it has been learned that the auction is all set to be staged in Jaipur on December 17 and 18 respectively. The same has drawn mixed reactions from the franchises as some of them wanted it to take place after the venue for the forthcoming IPL edition was agreed upon.
“We wanted the auction to be conducted after the venue is known so that we could have chosen our players accordingly but the BCCI has its own timelines to follow”, a franchise official was quoted as saying in Mumbai Mirror.
“We understand that the venue would be known by then,” another franchise official mentioned. Nevertheless, the IPL officials refrained from making any comments surrounding the same.
Back in 2009, the entire tournament took place in the Rainbow Nation and thereafter in 2014, the initial stages of the event was held in the UAE after which the crunch matches were played in India.
CSK- The erstwhile winners
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the previous edition of the tournament as they comprehensively defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), captained by New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson, in the final at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
It was also their first season after they couldn’t take part in the T20 extravaganza in 2016 and 2017 following their suspension along with Rajasthan Royals. They are also the most successful team in the event along with Mumbai Indians (MI), having already won the IPL as many as thrice.
