The Final of the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lived up to the expectations. The game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad went down to the last over, but eventually, Mumbai, led by Rohit Sharma, won by one run. With the victory, MI is now the most successful team in the IPL with four championships.

Mumbai crawls to a competitive score

Mumbai won the toss and CSK did extremely well as they restricted MI to 149 for eight. Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma blazed away and got 45 off 29. De Kock smacked three sixes off Deepak Chahar and perished to Shardul Thakur after a 17-ball 29. Chahar also added to the wickets column, dismissing Rohit Sharma, who got a 14-ball 15. Imran Tahir castled Suryakumar Yadav to pick up the third Mumbai wicket.

Ishan Kishan got out following a 26-ball 23. Krunal Pandya mistimed one and gave a caught and bowled to Thakur. In the 18th over, Suresh Raina dropped Hardik Pandya, but it didn’t cost CSK much as Chahar pinned him in front. Kieron Pollard farmed the strike and ended on 41 off 25 balls. His knock was laced with three fours and as many sixes. Chahar was the most successful CSK bowler with three wickets.

Shane Watson tries his heart out

Faf du Plessis took the Mumbai bowling by the scruff of its neck and smashed 26 off 13 balls with three fours and one over-boundary. However, he played one shot too many and fell prey to Krunal Pandya in the fourth over, stumped by De Kock. Suresh Raina couldn’t survive the heat and was nipped out by Rahul Chahar for eight. Jasprit Bumrah then picked up Ambati Rayudu to push CSK further on the backfoot.

MS Dhoni succumbed to a run-out after tantalizingly falling short of his crease. At that point in time, the Super Kings required 68 off 44 deliveries. In the last five overs, the Yellow Army needed a daunting 62 runs. Watson accomplished his fifty off 44 balls. Veteran Lasith Malinga conceded a significant 20 runs in the 16th over. The onslaught brought the target down to 42 off 24 balls.

In the next over, Chahar dropped a dolly of Watson. Bumrah gave away only four runs off the 18th over after which Watson butchered Krunal for three sixes to bring to target down to 18 off a couple of overs. Bumrah bowled the 19th over and finished with figures of 4-0-14-2. Watson got run out for after scoring 80 off 59. Shardul Thakur needed to score four off two and Malinga trapped him to end the game.
