It turned out to be another miserable day for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as they lost their fourth match to remain winless in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). Virat Kohli and Co slumped a defeat by seven wickets to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. For the home team, they would be glad to open their account in the T20 tournament.

Parthiv and Gopal steal the limelight

The Royals won the toss and put the Challengers to bat first. RCB started steadily with a 49-run opening partnership between Parthiv Patel and captain Kohli. Leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal gave RR their first breakthrough with the wicket of Virat, who strained a bit with 23 at less than a run-a-ball. AB de Villiers smacked a couple of fours and then gave Gopal a simple caught and bowled chance.

Shimron Hetmyer’s horror-run in the extravaganza continued, having scored one run before falling prey to Gopal. At the other end, Parthiv didn’t drop his guard and scored his fifty in 29 balls. He, along with Marcus Stoinis cobbled together a stand of 53 runs. Patel eventually notched 67 from 41 with nine fours and a six. Stoinis ended with 31. Moeen Ali chipped in with 18 and RCB ended with 158.

Royals get home in last over

Ajinkya Rahane and Jos Buttler got the Royals off to a flying start with a stand of 60 runs from 46 deliveries. The RR captain scored 22 from 20 with four fours even as Buttler was the more aggressive of the two batsmen. Yuzvendra Chahal trapped Rahane to give RCB something to cheer about. Buttler went on to score yet another fifty in 38 balls. The Englishman scored 59 from 43 with eight fours and one six.

Steve Smith and Rahul Tripathi thereafter steadied the ship and put on 50 runs for the third wicket and made sure that the hosts didn’t suffer any unnecessary stutter. Mohammad Siraj dismissed Steve Smith after the Australian batsman scored 38 runs in 31 balls with two boundaries and one six. Rahul Tripathi notched 34 from 23 with three fours and a one six. RR chased the target with one ball to spare.
