The Chennai Super Kings hit back into winning ways after suffering a huge defeat in the previous game against the Mumbai Indians. Taking on the Kings XI Punjab, CSK picked Faf du Plessis for the first time this season who struck a crucial half-century. On a typical slow Chepauk track, the home team finished with 160/3 in 20 overs. KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan put Kings XI in the chase after losing two wickets in the 2nd over. However, the duo failed to play aggressively in the last eight overs where they needed 70 but the team got only 47 runs.

A big stand in defeat:
110 – The 110-run partnership between KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan is the 5th highest in an unsuccessful chase in the IPL. The highest is the 135-run stand between Sunrisers’ Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey for the 3rd wicket in the previous edition against the RCB during a 14-run defeat.
Homecoming in the opposition camp for Ashwin:
60 – Ravichandran Ashwin featured in as many as 60 matches across all formats at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai before this game. He was the player of the home team in all those 60 matches.
51 – Ashwin completed 50 wickets in the Twenty20 format at the Chepauk Stadium with the wicket of Faf du Plessis. He is the first player to claim 50 T20 wickets at this venue by surpassing Dwayne Bravo’s tally of 49 wickets.

4 – Faf du Plessis has four half-centuries in the IPL against the Kings XI Punjab in only seven innings. He scored 271 runs against KXIP at an average of 38.71 and an S/R of 140.41.
